ABBY MALMAN, Doula & IBCLC

About Abby

I’m Abby, an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. If I’ve learned anything after more than five years spent supporting families through their unique breastfeeding challenges, it’s that no two experiences are the same. I’ve worked with tired mom’s who wonder-will I feel this tired forever? I’ve worked with moms who begin breastfeeding without issue, only to run into supply issues further down the road.

If it feels hard-it’s because it is hard! There is a learning curve, just like with anything new.

And a lot of moms encounter challenges on their way to finding a rhythm that works. I know I did! It was my own experiences as a doula and new mother that solidified the passion I have for supporting new families as an IBCLC. I started my lactation training when my son was two-months old, and the support I received during clinic was incredible. I really felt seen in my challenges and triumphs, and my community held that space for me to flourish into motherhood. This is the kind of supportive environment that I want to provide for you.

I am here to help you meet your personal breastfeeding goals, no matter what they are or how challenging things might seem in the moment.

My work began in private practice at Bliss Lactation, which I co-founded with Chelsea DeSorbo to serve the Portland area. Since then, I’ve moved back to Colorado and am thrilled to be back. I worked at Mothers’ Milk Bank for four years before starting my private practice. I love spending time in the mountains, seeing live music, mid century modern architecture, taking vacations to the Oregon Coast, and going to the Denver Botanic Gardens, my favorite place to relax.

  • Certified Childbirth Educator through BeboMia (2018)

  • Maternal Support Practitioner training through BeboMia (2019)

  • Certified Infant Massage Instructor (2020)

  • Oral Function: Assessment and Comprehensive Care for the Pre-Crawling Infant with Michelle Emanuel and Melissa Cole in Boston, MA in April (2019)

  • TummyTime! Method Training presented by Michelle Emanuel in Cincinnati, OH in September (2019)

  • Oral Functional Assessment of the Breastfeeding Dyad with Jennifer Tow

  • Gold Tongue Tie Symposium (2019)

  • Infant Sleep Certification (2019)

  • Oral Habilitation of the Breastfeeding Dyad Masterclass (2021)

In the end, breastfeeding is about you as an individual. Which is why my approach is so centered around your specific needs—around your goals, struggles, and relationship with your baby.

Exhausted, emotional, and looking for help. I’ve been there!

My passion for this work comes from firsthand experience. When my son was diagnosed with craniosynostosis at two months of age—when he underwent major surgery four months later—my stress level was at a 10. Yet, as worried as I was about my baby, it wasn’t traumatic because of the support our family received.

This support came in many forms. Healthcare providers. Family, friends, and coworkers. The Cranio Care Bears network. And other families who had been through the same surgery. I think back fondly to the nursing staff who helped me position my baby after his surgery to a “dangle feeding” position so he could nurse and relieve my plugged ducts! This is the kind of support I aim to provide for you whatever you’re going through, and however you might feel about it.

About Allison

Hello! My name is Allison McMullen, and I am a registered nurse and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. After I earned my bachelors of science in nursing, I began work as a postpartum nurse where I fell in love with caring for new parents during such a transformational time. Combined with my passion for preventive health promotion, I decided to pursue breastfeeding counseling.

With my experience as a postpartum nurse and, later, neonatal intensive care nurse, I feel very comfortable around mothers and newborns. I have learned so much since I began working alongside Abby in the fall of 2022, and look forward to learning even more as we see families together!

Some of my favorite activities are porch sitting, hiking with my husband, walking my dog, exercising, cooking, traveling, and spending time with family!

“It's time to change our ways. To pick up the threads of knowledge that we forgot and weave them into a new kind of fabric to hold the mother, we must do it for ourselves and for our children. Because the way women become mothers, profoundly affects the way their children awaken to this world. When you take care of the mother, you take care of the child.”
